Why did the turtle cross the road?

Yesterday on the way back from Aberdeen just as we were coming west out of Eureka, James noticed that there was something on the road. At first it looked like a piece of tire that probably came off a semi-truck. Then as we got closer it was moving. It might have been a badger or a raccoon at that distance. James slowed down and soon we realized it was of all things a turtle. It was a huge snapping turtle, straight out of the lagoon waters on the south side of the road.

it is hard to see the size without anything to gauge it. It was about 18 inches long and snapped pretty fiercely when I poked it to get it off the road. It eventually went back to the lagoon.

Your title reminds me of a joke I made up several years ago that, like all good humor, has a kernel of truth to it. Remember we live in a very rural area on the Central Coast of California and have gazillions of ground squirrels. So here it is for your enjoyment. “Why did the squirrel cross the road? Because there was a car coming.” If you ever saw the suicidal squirrels around here, you would appreciate how true that is. The squirrels get three quarters of the way across the road and when you are almost right up to their pathway, they turn around and fling themselves under your tires.
Thanks for rescuing the turtle. It was the humane thing to do.
