So Paulina finally hit her goal of 13 meters for the bag throw. It was a good day at the North Star Athletic Association Indoor Championships held in Brookings, SD. It was a good day for the throwers and a great day for the University of Jamestown team as a whole. Paulina ended up making finals in both events and picking up sixth place in the weight throw. The top three were given medals, which made Paulina feel sad for the senior who was fourth, but I guess that is how things go sometimes. The other positive note was that each of the girls who threw placed in something, though none of them placed in both. Together, they contributed 12 points to the team total of 179, and the Jimmies outscored second place by 24 points. The head coach commended the throwers for their efforts which came in early in the meet and gave the runners a little boost that they were getting some help. Come to think of it the team also had 12 points when they started from the pentatheletes, so there is the margin of 24.

Paulina’s throw was 13.38 meters, which according to the conversion on the website is 43′ 10 3/4.” This should put her maybe one spot higher on the all time Jimmies list of weight throwers. For those of you who don’t know what I am talking about, it is a 20 pound weight that is in a baglike thing with a handle, and to throw it athletes use a spin similar to the hammer throw. It is probably the only thing close to the discus spin for an indoor event. The picture to the right shows the area where they threw. The beige line on the stripped field was about the 13 meter mark. Paulina went well past that 14 meter mark in warm ups, but must have tensed up during the actual competition.

It was a great day and we were quite happy that she was able to hit her personal record in the effort. In fact it sounds like the entire set of throwers hit their personal bests in the weight throw. They did not perform quite as well in the shot put, but were close to their bests. The girl who placed ninth in weight (no score) was able to slide into sixth in the shot put, so that was great. Paulina was ninth in the shot put, which means she made finals, but no score. She threw 32′ 8 1/2″ which is still a bit behind the big sister. I would have to bring that up. Ha! I told her not to worry breaking the family record would not count from indoors to outdoors so she will have to do in during the outdoor season. She figures Jessica won’t let it count no matter what because it is a high school to college age difference. Oh well, we each have our bragging rights at different things.

Apparently mine is in making banana bread. James was asked for my recipe by a fellow coach. The guy wants it on a plain card so he can sneak it in place of his wife’s which apparently has no flavor. Oh my how funny! I think I will bake the guy a loaf sometime this week and he can keep it at school. I am guessing I use more sugar, and I always throw in extra banana. Enough for now, I have more details about Paulina’s fleece blanket on the lucindacrafts site. Take care and stay warm.
